The Joy of Setting the Table

Decorating for the holiday’s is one of my most favorite things. Not necessarily decorating the house (I feel like that can take ages!) but planning out the holiday meal and table scape has always been so much fun. Coming from a small family, our holiday meals were intimate and personal around a beautifully decorated table. One of my fondest memories growing up was helping my Gramma set the table and it was there that started my love of details.

One Christmas, when I was maybe 9 or 10 years old, I took it upon myself to make place cards for each seat (yes, all five of them!). I spent a good hour in my room cutting out small cards and writing everyone’s names in not-so-beautiful script. Then I decorated each card with some sort of holiday themed sticker. When I was done, I ran back into the dining room and carefully placed each card at the top of each dinner plate – proud to show off my handy work! It may not have been fancy, but it was the first time I really found the joy of setting the table and adding the little details that make such a difference.

I was inspired by this memory to create a holiday table scape with a modern twist for this stylized shoot. When I found The Assembly Room in uptown Charlotte I knew this was the perfect location. Their farm tables and rustic chairs along with the gorgeous natural light that poured into the space checked everything on my list! When I talked with my friend Melissa Martin Julien of Proper Flower and told her my design ideas – she couldn’t contain her excitement – mainly because she got to forage from her yard and brought me the most beautiful red maple leaf branches!

eThis shoot truly turned out better than I could have expected – the pop of blue with the taper candles was inspired by the invite design by my ever-so-talented friend Brigid of Dash of Details; and the last-minute cranberry runner just sealed the deal! Below is my modern take on a traditional holiday table setting that can be replicated for a large event or kept intimate – for a small family of five!
